Computers and other electronics are full of harmful metals and toxins that simply don’t belong in the environment or taken by unscrupulous people who use the materials in illegal and potentially dangerous ways. Like so many other kinds of used materials, in the right hands and properly disposed of, your computer can actually be used for useful and safe products in its next life.
If you are in a place with a computer that has outlived its usefulness to you or anyone else, the first resource to check about computer recycling is the manufacturer of your machine. As the recycling movement broadens, many technology companies are making the decision to offer cheap or free recycling to their customers. Of course, it is beneficial to the environment, but also gives the company name a little boost as well.
Computers that have been pieced together from all kinds of sources or those from companies without a computer recycling program in place are going to have to be disposed of by other means. Go to your local phone book or online resources and look for recycling centers in your area. Even if they don’t recycle computers themselves, there is a good possibility the staff knows of reliable places that do. Be sure to ask all of the important questions about their policies. You will want to know how the data on your old system will be destroyed and what happens to the computer materials during and after deconstruction.
